Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash could have written a great song about this.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune has an article called "In Jail For Being In Debt" which describes the cases of people going to jail for unpaid debt in many jurisdictions. Although they are supposedly getting arrested for not showing up for court, the reality is this is an unusual practice in civil cases involving fairly small amounts of debt. The credit card companies and collection agencies they have sold the bad debt to are essentially using our tax dollars to collect their money.

In Northeast Pennsylvania, we watch as thirty public officials charged with bribery, fraud and abuse of the public trust are sentenced to six months home confinement.

In other states, little old ladies sit in the pokey because they defaulted on a Discover Card five years earlier. Nobody ever told them their credit cards could land them in jail. It's doubtful Discover Card will ever use that line in an ad.

A lawyer quoted in the article calls jail a "harsh sanction".

He is wrong.

It is beyond harsh. It is cruel and does not fit whatever crime was committed. Loss of liberty should be reserved for those really deserve it. It's as if too many people have had their credit ratings destroyed already for that to be enough of a threat. Now, the threat is your freedom and good name. Since when has Discover Card enjoyed such a close association with our national destiny that our government will act as their unpaid enforcer? It's not like the big finance banks contribute millions of dollars to political campaigns while wining and dining everyone on Capitol Hill. Oh, wait....

Our economy is carried on the backs of working Americans. Sheer statistics dictate that many will encounter some kind of trouble which will prevent them, at some point, from being able to pay bills. There are many reasons for the faltering economy, but the ones taking the blame look like they are going to be ordinary people.

Should they all file bankruptcy? Should they all go to jail? Who is going to pay for their incarceration? Discover Card? Guess again. John Q. Public will foot the bill, by which I mean to say that you and me and everyone else that pays taxes will foot the bill. I've never actually met anyone named John Q. Public.

What about the lenders that laid these credit card traps? What kind of sanction should they receive?

No one even considers it. Maybe we should start.

Our country will not turn around until it gets realistic. America does not need to put old ladies in Folsom Prison. America needs a financial workout.

what is a good outline for writing a johnny cash paper?

I am in the middle of writing a research paper on Johnny Cash, I have to have an outline and I cant think of a topic for the last paragraph. Does anyone have any ideas? Please thanks.
