Kid Joe

The web is no longer a place where children just click around and entertain themselves. With the rise in broadband availability, and the discounting of digital tools, children are moving from spectator to participant. This is good news for parents as the web is becoming a safer place for children to express their views about the world around them in the form of kid generated animation, blogging, webshows, etc.
According to a recent study carried out by Grunwald Associates, the number of content contributing children is growing exponentially and isn't even close to hitting its peak. Five years ago (!) in a surveyed group of children between the ages of six and seventeen, 10 percent of those, approximately two million youthful users, had staked out their own personal space on the web.
Of those two million users, children from 9 to 12 make up nine percent with 33% of those surveyed having plans to open their own website. This number was expected to triple by 2005. Remember, this was before Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, WordPress, and Youtube. We are in the "silent movie" era of online production by young people.
Traditional media outlets like Nickelodeon have heard the call of their viewers. In March of 2007, Nickelodeon announced the live-action show based on content generated by their viewers, iCarly. Hosted by Carly (played by Miranda Cosgrove) the concept is that Carly is the Webmaster of her own home-based streaming webcast. During the show, Carly gives her viewers assignments concerning media creation. The viewers then can film their own kid generated video content and post it to the iCarly website. The content then has the potential for rebroadcast on iCarly or can be used as content for the web-based portions of the show.
For the Nickelodeon, activation of their demographic allows the children to explore the creative possibilities available to them, speak out about issues important to them or just plain have fun. They create a bond with their viewers by being interactive and encouraging kids to be producers themselves.
The phenomenon extends far beyond iCarly. As viewers of Youtube know, Fred Finklestein, a random teen from the midwest, can generate an audience in the millions. Fred's high-pitched, speedy voice screams from each episode of "Fred" on Youtube to 30 million-plus viewers. Descending from Fred's dominance in the youth generated channel line-up are thousands of singers, dancers, animators and webshow hosts under the age of 18. Youths are broadcasting their own networks.
Kids "get" that they are not only content producers. They are also distributors, marketers and brand managers. Parents who get this will find an amazing outlet for their child's native creative impulses. Building an audience for an online channel provides the opportunity for involvement in their children's lives and creative development.
Teachers are getting in on the act as well. Teachertube.com is evidence that educators hail this online websho production as a step forward in child education. By creating an outlet, these Internet entertainment providers are freeing children from their joysticks, turning them from video game junkies into active socially aware Internet citizens.
To give this a try, open an account on a site like teachertube.com. Post a short video of your child's talent, and see what happens. Send an email to all your friends and neighbors with a link back to the video. You are now a distributor. If you want to widen the audience for your child's new channel, use keywords, tags and meta tags to flag your video in the search database.
Soon you'll have people finding the video online. People who enjoy the type of content your child produces. With basic privacy steps, you can be assured that you can do this repeatedly until your youngster has an audience waiting for the next performance.
We are truly coming into a new age of entertainment and content production via the web. Will you encourage your child to continue to be a couch potato, or will you get them up and running their own movie studio? Today, this is a real choice, perhaps for the first time in history, for our young people. Will you help? I certainly hope so.
Joe Shays has written about kids media for the past twenty years. He is passionate about teaching kids how to make their own webshows. To see example of kids doing amazing things on the web go to the animation chefs or to shark vs rabbit.
