The DLT tape was introduced and developed by Digital Equipment Corporation DEC from 1984 onwards. Quantum purchased the DLT technology in 1994. Quantum Corporation currently manufactures the drives and licenses the trademark and technology. The new and higher capacity version of DLT tape is called the SDLT Super DLT.

The DLT IV tape offers its users value and reliability in DLT backup tape storage. It is the fourth version of DLT backup tape technology. The dlt-iv tape has native capacity of 40GB and compressed rate of 80GB. The DLT-iv tapes have estimated archival life of 30 years. The new and advanced form of the DLT tape technology is called the Super DLT tape. “Optical servo system” has been introduced in the SDLT tapes. The function of this optical servo system is to read the servo patterns from the back of the reel.

To check the reliability of the Sony dlt tapes, the Sony carried out experiments on some recycled Sony dlt-iv backup tapes that were purchased by the company. The backup tapes that have completed their useable life are removed by the companies and are not further utilized. These tapes are known as the “recycled tapes”.

It is very important for the companies to select a reliable and robust medium for the purpose of backup storage system, so that the valuable and precious data is protected and safe. The reliability of the backup storage tape is mostly affected by the handling, quality and integrity of the brand. The reliability of the tape is also dependent on the working of tape drive. The dlt-tapes that were used for experiment had been in use for 6-7 years, and then these recycled tapes were relabeled and sold. The new look was given by reprinting the ucards and by placing the tapes in the new boxes of album. The upper surface of the backup tape cartridge had some scratches though they were light.

The scratches indicated that the same tape drive was used more often to run the backup tapes. The maintenance of the tape drive can be detected by the damaged edges of the tape. Within the specification, the tape with damaged edges had higher rate of errors in comparison to the other tapes. After checking the total tape length, the damage on upper edge of the tape from start of the tape was detected at about eighty, two hundred seven, two hundred fifty and two hundred seventy two meters.

The reliability of the backup tape medium is associated with the working conditions of the environment, equipment used and most important the brand’s quality. Your top most priority should be that the precious data of the company be protected and made secured. This is important because the future of the company is dependent on this data which is the valuable asset of the company. You may not have an idea regarding the tape cartridge, because it can be changed by the removal of the screws of the tape cartridge.

When I was nine my father bought me a cassette player and two cassettes Billy Joel-innocent man and The Temptations greatest hits.

The first I ever bought for myself was on vinyl and that was Madonna like a virgin and Beastie boys Licenses to ill!
